Explanation of what an apostille is

What is the difference between a court apostille and a Ministry of Foreign Affairs apostille and how does this mechanism work?

If you have reached the stage where a foreign authority has asked you to produce an Israeli document for an official procedure overseas, you have probably encountered the question of what an apostille is and why you even need this bureaucratic process. Simply put, it is an international mechanism designed to replace the old and tedious chain of approvals, which in the past required citizens to go through several government ministries and then also to the embassy of the destination country in Israel. The modern approval constitutes a kind of global ID card for the signature appearing on the document, declaring to the receiving country that the signature has been verified by the issuing country and is completely original. Once the official sticker or stamp is affixed to the paper, no additional consular approval is required, and the document becomes admissible and legally recognized in all countries that have signed the international agreement.

Understanding the division of powers between the approving bodies in Israel is the key to preventing errors and delays in the timelines of your case. The main difference lies in the source of the document: for documents originating from the court system or certificates signed and verified by a private lawyer, the address for performing the validation will be a court apostille confirming the correctness of the legal signature. In contrast, original public certificates issued by various government ministries (such as birth or death certificates from the Population Authority) require contacting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs apostille counters. If there is a tight schedule or a complex transaction that must be carried out without delay, it is recommended to issue an urgent apostille through skilled field personnel who are familiar with the threshold requirements of each body and ensure full compliance with the required verification protocol.
